Description
This popular out-and-back hike can be completed in about an hour. It starts as an easy, level track and quickly becomes quite steep with a couple tricky rocks and roots to negotiate. Sure footed hikers shouldn't have any problems. Once at the top the hill, the trail fairly levels off and impressive views can be enjoyed off both the east and west sides. There are too many trees for a 360-degree view. This place is very nice for a perfect sweeping view of radiant tree colors in the fall. David D. Mallory began commercial mining of the hill's silica in 1870; the quarry closed when the Mashantucket Pequots acquired the land in 1994. Lantern Hill is the southwestern terminus of the Narragansett Trail, a hiking path maintained in Connecticut by the Connecticut Forest and Park Association (CFPA). The hilltop offers views of the Atlantic Ocean and the surrounding countryside.
