Springer Mountain Loop via Len Foote Inn

Starting from Amicalola Falls, the Springer Approach Trail is often used as the launching point for the 2,190-mile trek along the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine. For many, it makes a great day hike, assuming youare comfortable walking more than 15 miles round trip. To make this hike a loop, consider a stop at the the Len Foote Inn on the way as a rest stop for free coffee and cake (tips encouraged!). Established in 1998, the inn is owned by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and operated by Appalachian Education and Recreation Services (AERS) - an affiliate of the Georgia Appalachian Trail Club. The facility is only accessible by foot and stresses environmentally conscious practices in operation. The hike itself can be started with a grueling ascent up a set of stairs alongside the 729-foot Amicalola Falls, the highest waterfall in Georgia and also one of the highest on the East Coast. The hike can also be started at the top of the falls;keep in mind that the loop itself has over 3,500 feet of total elevation gain already, so consider your stamina before deciding how much extra elevation and distance you want to tack on. The trail will remain under forest canopy for virtually the whole day, climbing and descending several ridges. There are nice vistas at the 3,782-foot summit of Springer Mountain, the top of Amicalola falls, and Len Foote Inn to reward you for your efforts.
