Description
The Redtail Trail is one of the easier and most accessible walking paths inside the Wind Wolves Preserve. At 1.2 miles, the trail follows a wide, hard packed dirt path the meanders through the grassy area in the central part of the preserve. The walk begins at the trail's high point, marked by a trailhead sign located across from a large parking area. From here, the path soon splits and slowly descends into the shallow valleys of the area. Grasses, Bakersfield cactus, and seasonal wild flowers line the path. About halfway in, a couple tables are set amidst the plant restoration going on, so while there is no shade right now, hopefully in a few years' time this will provide a shaded resting spot along the hike. Those with a keen eye might spot the kit foxes that live throughout the area, and the mountains make a scenic backdrop visible from the entirety of the path. This path is an easy walk, and good for families with children. There are shaded picnic tables adjacent to the parking area as well.Visitors must follow all Wind Wolves Preserve rules, including dogs being leashed, no trailers or RVs permitted, and daily open hours from 8am to 5pm. While there is no entrance fee, visitors to the preserve must check in at the entry gate.
