There and Back
Starting from Onion Valley, the Kearsarge Pass Trail climbs through pine forest, passes several alpine lakes, and leads to the top of Kearsarge Pass (11,700') and into Kings Canyon National Park. Once over the pass, Kearsarge Lakes will be in view below. Descend from the pass and turn left at the Bullfrog Lake Trail junction. This trail then leads to the Kearsarge Lakes Trail (another left turn) and continues to the lakes. Around Kearsarge Lakes are several good campsites, with stunning views of the basin and the Kearsarge Pinnacles overhead. The side trip continuing to Bullfrog Lake is very worthwhile, as it is one of the most scenic lakes in the Kearsarge Basin. No camping is allowed at Bullfrog Lake. The Bullfrog Lake Trail extends past the lake and meets the PCT/JMT in less than a mile, providing options for extending this itinerary on to other destinations.
