Description
Bullfrog Lake is one of the most scenic lakes in the Kearsarge Basin and can be reached via this 14-mile out-and-back route located just outside of Independence, California. It features a solid climb through Inyo National Forest with stunning vistas amidst pristine nature. Starting from Onion Valley, the Kearsarge Pass Trail climbs through pine forest, passes several alpine lakes, and leads to the top of Kearsarge Pass (11,700') and into Kings Canyon National Park. The Bullfrog Lake Trail is located on the west side of Kearsarge Pass and provides an alternate to a section of the Kearsarge Pass Trail. Descend Kearsarge Pass and turn left at the Bullfrog Lake Trail junction. The trail leads to Kearsarge Lakes Trail, passes above Bullfrog Lake, and connects with the Pacific Crest Trail / John Muir Trail. The shores of Bullfrog Lake are certainly worth a visit, as it is one of the most scenic lakes in the Kearsarge Basin. TRAILHEADThe trailhead for Kearsarge Pass Trail is located at Onion Valley, west of Independence off of Highway 395. The trailhead features a large parking area, toilets, bear vaults, and water. The paved parking area is available for day use and overnight parking.This is an active bear area and visitors are advised not to leave food or scented items in their cars. The road to the trailhead is usually open May-November. The Onion Valley Campground is also located at the trailhead and sites can be reserved in advance through www.recreation.gov. BACKCOUNTRY PERMITSWilderness/backcountry permits are not required for day use.
