Description
The Manter Meadow Hike is an 15.7-mile out-and-back route that traverses around Manter Meadow, the largest meadow in the Domeland Wilderness. This beautiful trek can be completed in a day or as an overnight backpacking trip. It features beautiful meadows, flowing streams, and scenic views of granite domes. Camping in the Domeland Wilderness does not require a permit and there are plenty of beautiful campsites overlooking the meadow. This trail is suitable for running, hiking, backpacking, and horseback riding. The trailhead for Manter Meadow is located off of Big Meadow Road (23S07). From there, you will take the South Manter Trail. There is a climb that leads to a long descent at the start of the trail. It follows South Manter Creek to the south end of the meadow, where it is intersected by the Woodpecker Trail #34E08. Take the Woodpecker Trail north, walking around the meadow. Halfway through the Woodpecker Trail the route turns right to reach the Little Manter Campground, a backcountry campsite in the Domeland Wilderness. Little Manter Campground is a great place to set up for the site or stop for a picnic during the day. Back on the Woodpecker Trail, take the next trail junction, at the northeast corner of the meadow, turn left. Head east and follow the path around the meadow for approximately a mile, then turn around and retrace your steps to get back to the start. CAMPING AND PERMITSWilderness permits are not required. Campfire permits are required. ADDITIONAL INFORMATIONFor current trail conditions, contact the Kern River Ranger District: 1-760-376-3781.
