Description
In this 18.7-mile out-and-back route, you will travel through San Bernardino National Forest and ascend Jepson Peak. One of Southern California's highest mountains, it rises to 11,209 feet in the San Gorgonio Wilderness Area east of San Bernardino. The trek features a steep climb and a steep descent with an elevation gain of nearly 6,000 feet. This is a strenuous trek that is suitable for hikers, trail runners, and backpackers. The Vivian Creek Trailhead is located off of Highway 38 outside of the small town of Forest Falls. Initially, the trail heads east and then north following a ridge that runs along the west side of Mount San Gorgonio. Upon reaching a trail junction near the top of the climb, turn left for Jepson Peak (option to turn right and add an additional climb to the top of Mount San Gorgonio, Southern California's tallest peak). Continue for about a mile and then leave the main trail, briefly following a faint use-trail to the summit. When you are ready to return, simply retrace your steps back to the start. VEGETATIONThis area features several distinct biotic communities including chaparral, yellow-pine forests, montane meadows, lodgepole forests, sub-alpine forest, and alpine fells.WILDLIFEThe San Gorgonio Wilderness is home to a variety of animals including chipmunks, squirrels, black bears, bighorn sheep, mountain lions, coyotes, and mule deer.BACKCOUNTRY PERMITSPermits are required for day and overnight use. Permits are free and can be obtained from the San Gorgonio Wilderness Association. You can find more information at www.sgwa.org/wilderness-permits.
