Uncompahgre Peak from Nellie Creek

The route begins and ends at Nellie Creek Trailhead (11,400') and reaches the summit of Uncompahgre Peak (14,318'). From the trailhead, follow the trail nearly 0.5 mile to timberline, nearing Nellie Creek. Near 11,800', pass large boulders as the trail parallels the stream. Climb a hill to a junction near 11,950' and continue west into the large basin south of Uncompahgre. Turn left and follow the trail southwest across the basin toward the south ridge. Reach the south ridge near 12,900' and follow it northwest onto Uncompahgre's southeast face. Climb switchbacks to the ridge crest near 13,800', then follow the trail left onto the west face. Crux: 150 feet of steep, loose rock leads below the upper slopes here — the route's crux, with considerable rockfall hazard. Work back toward the ridge, passing a rock tower on its right, or via a slightly steeper line just before it; both hold loose rock. Once the terrain eases, a more defined trail leads to the summit plateau. Descend the same route. From the 2WD parking area on Henson Creek Road, add 4 miles each way on the Nellie Creek road, for a 15.5-mile round trip with 5,500 vertical feet of gain.
