Topanga State Park Loop

The Topanga State Park Loop is a scenic, 21.6-mile loop in the Santa Monica Mountains located near the city of Tarzana. The route runs east/west from the valley towards the ocean through Topanga State Park. This is a popular area for trail runners, hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders. Some portions of this route can get crowded on the weekends. Begin at the Caballero Canyon Trailhead and follow the Caballero Canyon Trail, a singletrack that gains more than 550 feet in 1.7 miles. The trail leads to Mullholland Drive, a scenic fire road with views of Santa Monica Mountains and the Pacific Ocean. After approximately 5 miles, the route leaves the fire road and follows the Temescal Ridge Trail, another singletrack trail. The trail descends to Temescal Falls, a beautiful oasis with small pools and oak trees. After the falls, the trail goes to Will Rogers State Park where there are bathrooms, trashcans, picnic tables, and a visitor center. This is a great spot for a break before moving on to the next section, which is mostly uphill for about 7 miles through Sullivan Canyon. In the final 2 miles, you'll enjoy scenic mountain and ocean views as you descend the Caballero Canyon Trail back to the trailhead.PARKINGAmple street parking is available off Reseda Boulevard near the trailhead.WATERThis route can get extremely hot in the summer and some portions are exposed with no shade. Plan to bring and carry plenty of food and water.
