Description
Bowie Nature Park, located in Fairview, Tennessee, provides over 700 acres of forest, lakes, wetland and grassland to be explored by 17 miles of trail. Trails are open to hikers as well as bike and equestrian use (note that a $2 fee is charged for bikes/horses). Unique features of the park include stretches of pine forest and, of course, the several small lakes located here. There is also a nature center, outdoor classroom, playground and picnic area. The longest trail in Bowie Nature Park is the 4.5 mile Perimeter Trail (closer to 4.8 miles including distance to/from the parking area). This loop trail begins just above Lake Van. Heading clockwise, you'll pass under some power lines on a gentle gravel pathway. The trail then turns to dirt as it makes its way through oak and hickory forest. You'll soon cross a small stream and pass by a few homes (just outside the park boundary) as you work your way through the forest. Eventually the trail comes out to the power lines again. You'll follow these for a while until the trail turns sharply and nears a road. The trail follows this road for a short distance until it enters into some beautiful pine forest. This is a lovely stretch of trail. You'll continue through the pines, pass a small cemetery and follow a small creek for a short distance. The trail then turns and parallels the northern boundary of the park. Eventually you'll find yourself back at the power lines. Follow the trail as it heads straight toward Lake Van. The official end of the Perimeter Trail is before the lake, but you'll need to find a way back to your parked car. Consider hiking down to the lake and then following the shoreline pathway around to the parking area. The lake is certainly a highlight of the trail. If you feel like exploring further, there are several more small lakes that are accessible via another trail that takes off from here.
