Cooper Spur + Cloud Cap Hike

The Cooper Spur and Cloud Cap Hike is a challenging 7.4-mile round-trip route on the rugged north side of Mount Hood. Starting at an elevation of 5,852 feet near Cloud Cap Campground, the trail climbs approximately 3,100 feet to a high point of 8,947 feet along Cooper Spur, a prominent ridgeline situated just east of the Eliot Glacier. Hikers are treated to dramatic, close-up views of Mount Hood's summit, the deep crevasses of the Eliot Glacier, and expansive vistas of northern Cascade peaks including Mount Adams, Mount Rainier, Mount St. Helens, and Mount Jefferson. The trail begins near the historic Cloud Cap Inn and traverses through subalpine forest before emerging onto the exposed, rocky ridge of Cooper Spur. Due to the high elevation and exposure to the elements, this hike is best suited for experienced hikers prepared for steep gradients and rapid weather changes.
