Mountain bikes and 4-wheel-drive vehicles are allowed in the park on the backcountry roads. In order to protect yourself and the surrounding ecosystem, mechanical travel is restricted to established roads. Tracks on open desert can remain for years and damages the desert ecosystem while tarnishing the experience for subsequent visitors. Off-road vehicles and all-terrain vehicles may not be used in the park.
Path Type
Point to Point
Beginning 6.5 miles (10.5 km) north of Cottonwood Visitor Center, this backcountry dirt road heads through Pinto Basin, crossing a number of dry washes, while winding through canyons in the Pinto Mountains. The first 13 miles are in the national park boundary and the remainder of the road heads northwest through the Needles Management area of the Bureau of Land Management. There are a number of old mines and wells located off this road, but take caution as many may be too dangerous to explore.
