There and Back
The Derway Island Nature Trail begins at Derway Cove Trailhead off North Avenue, following a mostly flat path into a riparian forest along the Winooski River. This novice-friendly route winds through floodplain habitat with occasional short spurs. Visitors can expect shaded walking beneath silver maples and cottonwoods, with consistent views of surrounding wetlands and the river.
Bird activity is high throughout the area, especially during spring and fall migrations, making this one of the better day hikes near Burlington for wildlife observation. Waterfowl, songbirds, and the occasional heron are common sightings, along with deer and beaver. While the trail is accessible year-round, it may be muddy in spring or temporarily impassable after flooding. No permits are needed, but hikers should remain alert for ticks and poison ivy. This is a quiet, low-elevation route offering easy walking and strong potential for wildlife encounters close to town.
