Description
About a half-mile approach leads to the ridgeline. On the way up, there is a cool bonsai-type tree with roots attached to a boulder. At this point, it is necessary to STOP and ask permission from the Great Squirrel to enter his section of the trail. The request must be made loud, clear, and penitent. Failure to do so will result in him pelting the offenders, and company, with acorns, which has been known to be potentially near-fatal. After crossing the Great Squirrel section, which is the steepest non-rock portion of the trail, the trail follows the ridge and is free of other hostile animal spirits. Along the way to the AT, you'll pass by a few opportunities to scramble some large piles of granite. Take the time to scale them, snap some pics for the gram, contemplate life and nature. At the end of the trail (about 1.5-miles from the parking lot), there look to be some places to camp. This is also where you can pick up the AT. Turn around and follow the blue blazes, and you'll eventually find your car. (No need to get permission from the Great Squirrel this time, unless you skipped the ritual on the ascent.)
