Description
Sawtooth Mountain in Oregon's Cascade Range is another great peak to hike for forested solitude and magnificent mountain views. On a clear day you can see a plethora of other peaks and lakes including Diamond Peak, Three Sisters, Mount Thielsen, Cowhorn Mountain, Summit Lake, Timpanogas Lake, Indigo Lake, June Lake, and Calamut Lake. There are a few options to get to the summit, with both there-and-back trails and loop trails. One option is to hike from Timpanogas Campground in to Indigo Lake and take the Indigo Lake extension trail over the ridge, toward the Windy Pass junction. Follow the Windy Pass trail down through a small open meadow and then up the south side of the mountain. There are a few markers to direct you to the summit. The last section is a scramble up a steep scree field, but it doesn't require any climbing gear. After summiting you can head back the way you came or continue west on the loop toward June Lake and back to the parking area in Timpanogas Campground. Either way you will enjoy old-growth forests, beautiful lakes, alpine meadows, and stunning views. Indigo Lake is great place to rest and take a dip after a good hike. The cool, clear water is very refreshing. Note that depending on the time of year there may be snow covering the path. Also, during the summer the mosquitoes can be horrendous, so plan your adventure and pack accordingly.
