Description
The Woodland Dunes Trail is a mile-long loop through the woods in Kohler-Andrae State Park. Kohler-Andrae State Park is located on the shores of Lake Michigan south of Sheboygan, Wisconsin. The Woodland Dunes Trail has interpretive signs along the trail that describe the trees of this forested dune area. Parking for the Woodland Dunes Trail is located near the playground at parking lot P8. The trail can also be accessed from the south end of the campground. The trail begins with a crushed limestone surface that is wheelchair and stroller accessible. This accessible portion of the trail is a nature trail that is one quarter mile long loop. The accessible nature trail loop or the mile long Woodland Dunes Trail can be taken in a clockwise or counter-clockwise direction. After a short walk from the trailhead, trail splits; there is a Nature Trail and Accessible Path sign that directs hikers to the right. A bit further down the trail the accessible path heads to the left; go straight here. After about a third of a mile the trail goes through the campground. Once through the campground the trail intersects with the half mile long Marsh Trail; take a left here. The trail then heads east towards Lake Michigan. Once near the lake, there are some unofficial trails that lead to the beach. The trail joins the accessible path again and finishes by the playground.Dogs are allowed on the Woodland Dunes Trail but must be kept on a leash that is no longer than 8 feet in length. Since the Woodland Dunes Trail is located in a state park, a fee must be paid to enter the park. A day use or annual permit can be purchased at the park office. The Woodland Dunes Trail is a pleasant hike through a forest with a wide variety of trees including some towering pines. The trail is quite smooth and level making it suitable for most abilities.
