Ice Box Canyon in Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area is a great hike to escape Las Vegas that is only a short drive away. Red Rock is in the high desert, which means very hot summers and winters that are cold and dry with a little bit of snow. A scenic drive to the trailhead offers various other hikes around the conservation area. The first mile of the hike is through open desert, and hikers will notice a variety of desert flora. The temperature cools dramatically once you reach the canyon, and the trail begins to follow a very small stream. The cooler and wetter environment is home to greener plants, and wildlife is also abundant. Rock climbers may be seen scaling the walls here. The hike becomes rocky, and in some places boulders in the trail require some scrambling to get around. The canyon walls narrow and eventually the trail ends up at a small waterfall stream.
