Children's Discovery Loop Trail

The Children's Discovery Loop Trail in the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area is a short hikeaapproximately 1 mileawith an emphasis on being educational for children. Trail brochures are available in the Red Rock Canyon Visitor Center, and these contain descriptions of different sites of interest along the trail. Nine numbered sign posts along the hike offer hikers the chance to read about the features in the brochure. These include rock art sites and different plants. The trail begins by leaving the far end of the parking lot before cutting left and joining the bottom of the canyon wall. From here the trail offers views looking east over much of the Red Rock area. Prickly pear cactus dots the trail, and bighorn sheep have been known to travel across the rocky canyon walls both here and opposite the canyon to the south. After just under a mile, the trail meets up with the Lost Creek Falls Trail. Taking the right fork will lead over a creek crossing and to a box canyon, where Lost Creek Canyon Falls flows during the cooler months or following a storm. Taking the left fork will soon lead across a wash and back to the parking area at a separate trailhead about mid-way through the parking lot. Trail brochures are only available at the visitor center;there are none at the trailhead. There is a vault toilet in the parking area, however there is no water here. Much of the hike is exposed and away from shade.
