Description
Anchorage has an extensive system of multi-use paths through the city, used all year long for a variety of recreation modes. From walking and running to biking, skiing, and even dog sledding--you'll see it all throughout the course of the seasons in Anchorage. Of the many paths to choose from, Chester Creek Trail is one that's not to be missed. As a central artery of the trail network, you'll probably use Chester Creek to get anywhere else, but this trail is notable on its own for the abundance of nature as well as other activities surrounding it.Chester Creek is a paved trail through the middle of the city, but it follows a corridor of green with a surprising variety of scenery and wildlife. The creek provides habitat for native fish, and the trees are full of resident and migratory birds. Bigger animals live here as well. It's not uncommon to see moose and even black bears sharing the trail with joggers and bikers! Keep in mind that though they're in an urban setting, these are still wild animals and they can be dangerous. You should keep a safe distance and let them go on their way.The official span of Chester Creek Trail is from Westchester Lagoon, where it connects with Coastal Trail, to Goose Lake where it connects with additional paved and unpaved paths. There are many other access points in between, including public parks, businesses, and neighborhoods. You might walk or ride the trail straight through, to get from point A to point B. Or you might take your time and enjoy the many distractions along the way. You'll find ponds, streams, playgrounds, ball fields, grassy lawns, and dirt trails leading into the woods. Whether for a stroll with the family, a walk with the dogs, a bike ride to work, or a workout in the evening, Chester Creek is the go-to local trail.
