Guadalupe Peak Trail

No rating
At 8,753', Guadalupe Peak is the highest point in Texas — an isolated desert summit rising from the Chihuahuan Desert in Guadalupe Mountains National Park near the New Mexico border. The route climbs 3,000 vertical feet through exposed limestone switchbacks, a hidden pocket of pine forest, and a final ridge push to one of the most far-reaching summit panoramas in the American Southwest.

Description
The Guadalupe Peak Trail begins at the Pine Springs Trailhead off US-62/180 and ends at the 8,753' summit. The route gains elevation immediately, switchbacking up a steep, rocky limestone slope for the first 1.5 miles — do not cut switchbacks, as erosion on this section is significant. After the initial climb, the trail rounds a cliff band and shifts to a north-facing slope where pinyon pine, southwestern white pine, and Douglas fir take hold in the shade. At approximately 3 miles, the trail crests a false summit. The Guadalupe Peak Wilderness Campground is located here; a free backcountry permit, obtained at the Pine Springs Visitor Center, is required for overnight use.

The trail flattens briefly through sparse ponderosa pine before dropping to cross a wooden footbridge. Beyond the bridge, the final push begins — a series of steep switchbacks on exposed ridgeline terrain. Pass the horse hitching posts and arrive at the summit at 8,753'. Views extend across the salt flats, the Delaware Basin, and the Sierra Diablo range.

Retrace the route to return; the rocky descent is harder on the knees than the climb and demands careful footing.
