Description
At the trailhead you will need to cross the street and then cross over the river bridge in order to start the hike to Popo Agie Falls. This hike was one of the highlights of my trip to Wyoming! We didn't know much about this hike beforehand but we saw the word "waterfall" on a map and decided to hike to it! Overall, the trail is very gradual so you will be gaining elevation fairly steadily from the start to the waterfalls. We saw fields of beautiful yellow daisy-like flowers for about 1/2 a mile and then we saw purple and red wildflowers. It really is a beautiful hike from start to finish! The trail will come near the river and we let my friend's dog cool off and get drinks as often as we could. This hike was easy enough that we could just focus on the beautiful canyon and take in all the views at each little overlook. At about the 1.3 mile mark you will come to a fork in the trail. The left trail leads to the falls. The right trail leads to the very much longer Middle Fork Trail. Stay to the left and continue on. You will have another hill to climb up and then you will just about be to the end. At the top of the hill you will finally see Popo Agie Falls in the distance. You will then come to a small bridge and a bench. This is a great place to relax but I say keep going up a little ways to an even more impressive view! This massive waterfall is like a giant water park! There are pools and falls all over! We spent the next hour hanging out and eating our snacks while climbing the rocks. Head back the same way.
