Description
The Cirque of the Towers is one of the most popular attractions in the Wind River Range - and for good reason. The absolutely stunning area features a semi-circle of towering 12,000ft+ peaks, and a single beautiful alpine lake. The Cirque is most commonly accessed via Big Sandy Lake, the shortest route available. Those open to a longer trip may want to consider an alternative route, via the Middle Fork and North Fork Trails. The trailhead is accessed by a quick and easy drive on a paved road from Lander, and the hike in is relatively gentle and easy. You'll begin from the Bruce Bridge Trailhead. Follow the Middle Fork Trail as it stays near the Middle Fork Popo Agie River for a while. There's even a short side trail to see the Popo Agie Falls. You'll continue along, slowly and gently gaining elevation. The trail soon enters the Popo Agie Wilderness. Continue until you reach the Pinto Park Trail which you'll now follow. This trail eventually leads to the namesake Pinto Park, where you'll have the first stunning views of the Cirque of the Towers in the distance. This is also a good place to camp.Continue onward and join the North Fork Trail. You'll follow this trail the rest of the way, past Lizard Head Meadows, to Lonesome Lake and the Cirque of the Towers.Lonesome Lake is the end destination, although you can explore further by hiking up toward Jackass Pass or Texas Pass for even more impressive views of the Cirque. Camping is available in the area, although please note that camping is not allowed with 1/4 mile of Lonesome Lake. After enjoying the Cirque, return to Bruce Bridge Trailhead the way you came.
