Description
At 9,648 feet above sea level, Pine Mountain is the second highest peak in the San Gabriel Mountains. It is located in the northeastern section of the Angeles National Forest, south of the small town of Wrightwood. In this 16-mile out-and-back hike, the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) and the North Backbone Trail are combined for a challenging traverse across rugged terrain to reach Pine Mountain's peak. The route starts from the Inspiration Point Trailhead, located off of Angeles Crest Highway / CA-2. From the parking area, take the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) south and continue across Blue Ridge, gradually climbing uphill for approximately 6.7 miles. Turn right (southwest) onto the North Backbone Trail and keep climbing up Pine Mountain. Be prepared for a steep ascent on the North Backbone Trail followed by a steep decent across loose and rocky terrain when you retrace your steps back to the trailhead. The route features panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and the Sheep Mountain Wilderness. It is a strenuous trek through remote wilderness that is ideal for anyone looking to build their uphill strength while navigating across steep and technical terrain. It is also a great route for trail running, hiking, backpacking, and camping.TRAILHEAD AMENITIESInspiration Point Trailhead features a large parking area, toilets, picnic benches, and a viewpoint.ADDITIONAL INFORMATIONSheep Mountain Wilderness Information: https://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/angeles/specialplaces/?cid=stelprdb5194614
