There and Back
The Joint Trail is a great adventure in Canyonlands National Park. It's a great off-road adventure to get to the trailhead, and you get to explore a very tight slot canyon before getting the classic views of the Needles at Chesler Park. This hike is not too long or difficult but does require some minor scrambling. Prepare yourself for a great time. There are some very interesting formations visible from the early parts of the trail. The entire route is often marked with stacked rock cairns. Always be on the lookout for these because it's easy to get mixed up in this natural maze. You will soon get into the rocks where you will come to a staircase. This area almost feels like you are in a cave as you weave in and out of the rocks. Several spots require minor rock scrambling. Nothing terribly difficult but could be for small children. You will soon approach the very tight slot for which this trail is named. At the end of the Joint you can turn back if you're tired or short on time. Keep going on this trail to reach a viewpoint of the famous Needles. You also get views across the Colorado River into the Dollhouse section of the Maze. Next up you will come to the large open meadows known as Chesler Park where you will hike through the meadows for up close views of the Needles. You will end this hike at the other side of the meadow at the brink of a canyon with really pretty views! If you have the energy you can continue on to the spectacular Druid Arch. Otherwise, turn back and follow the same trail you came.
