Amargosa Overlook Trail

The Amargosa Overlook Trail is a trail leading hikers on a 200' climb that gives a panoramic perspective over the Amargosa River wetlands as well as the town of Tecopa.The path is an out-and-back trail totalling 7 miles in length. Beginning at the fenced-in picnic bench area at the lower portion of the Tecopa Hot Springs Campground - a county campground and park managed and operated by a private vendor - the trail first descends across a dusty path adjacent to the Amargosa River wetlands. While usually dry and dusty with most of the river flowing underground, the wet season will bring seasonal streams that may need to be crossed, as well as raise the water level so that it flows above the dusty surface of the basin.The trail heads toward the first hill, where a use path begins climbing up the rocky slope. Winds begin to whip as you reach the top. A wooden cross braced by a mound of stones marks the peak, where panoramic views of the Amargosa River, wetlands, and hot springs area of Tecopa all sit nearby. At the bottom of the slope are benches where you can sit and observe the bird species in the Tecopa Ecological Reserve.From the peak, hikers can return the way they came.There is no shade on the hike, and no cell phone service in the area. There is also no drinking water available in the hot springs area, as well ground water is heavily mineralized. Hikers should be prepared for each of these.
