Path Type
There and Back
The trail begins in the forest and climbs, climbs, climbs. Expect mostly switchbacks for the first 1.7 miles. Pop out of the woods for a short stretch before re-entering old-growth forest. The grade finally eases somewhat at 2 miles, crossing a creek via footbridge before reaching a junction at 2.6 miles. Head left here for the lookout. The trail to the right continues to Monogram Lake - a good alternative destination. Continue climbing and you'll eventually emerge from tree cover at 3.3 miles. The lookout comes into view here, 1 trail mile ahead. You'll gain 1,000 feet in this final mile before reaching the summit. From the fire lookout, enjoy expansive views of the North Cascades in every direction. Originally the site of a 1920s fire lookout, the current structure was built in 1962 and remains open to the public.
