There and Back
The Swan River Nature Trail begins at the east end of Grand Drive in Bigfork, Montana, and travels upriver along the old roadbed of a decommissioned highway. This wide gravel route follows the north bank of the Swan River through Flathead National Forest, offering an easy walking surface suitable for novice hikers, leashed dogs, and cyclists. The path runs gently uphill with minimal elevation gain, closely tracing the river as it winds through a steep-walled gorge.
At about halfway, a short side path leads to a scenic overlook above a set of fast-moving rapids, and occasional benches provide spots to rest and enjoy the view. Keep right at any junctions to stay near the river. As the route continues, it passes beneath mature forest canopy with occasional views of rugged cliffs across the water. Wildlife sightings, especially bald eagles and ospreys, are common. The trail ends near the Swan River dam and returns along the same path. This year-round route is a popular option for low-elevation day hikes near Bigfork, though winter visitors should watch for snow or ice and carry bear spray during warmer months
