Description
The trail and the trailhead shelter are dedicated to the memory of R. Walston Chubb, a St. Louis business executive. Mr. Chubb was a leader in preserving open space and founded the St. Louis Area Open Space Council. This organization has been active in acquiring properties along the Meramec River. Built in 1984, the trail is one of the most popular multi-use trails in the system especially with the mountain bike community, so keep an eye out for them. The trail begins as a narrow earthen trail with a number of small climbs and descents but primarily follows the contours of the land. The trail heads along and through some interesting rock outcroppings. Some of the walls of rock are nearly 20 feet tall. These outcroppings occur at the same elevation throughout the park and consist of Gasconade dolomite. Please stay on the trail and do not shortcut the switchbacks as you go up or down the hillsides. After reaching the top of the first major hill, you'll come to a couple of flint mines on the right. This hilltop also provides a nice vista to the surrounding hills to the west and the Meramec River valley to the south. Continuing to the north, you begin a long descent to the river valley. Down through the stairs and past an overlook on top of one of the old river bluffs, you find yourself on the flat ground of the Meramec River Valley.
