Castenea Boulder Field Loop

This challenging hiking route begins at a gate along Nittany Road in Bald Eagle State Forest. From the gate, walk south along the road for a short distance, then take the first left. Stay left at the next fork, then continue bearing right at each junction as the trail climbs into classic ridge-and-valley terrain. The route winds through dense hardwood forest before reaching the Castenea Boulder Field — a rugged talus slope that requires hands-and-feet scrambling across uneven, mossy rock. Grippy, stable footwear is essential, and while dogs are allowed, they must be kept on leash and should be very sure-footed due to the rocky terrain. After the boulder field, the trail descends gradually and begins to follow West Kammerdiner Run, weaving through forest and crossing rocky streambeds on the way back. Toward the end of the route, the trail briefly meets Nittany Road — turn right on the road, then quickly turn left to rejoin the trail and return to the initial fork near the trailhead. Trail markings can be faint in places, so using GPS or a downloaded map is recommended. Creek crossings can be difficult during wet conditions or after recent rain. Best hiked between March and October, this strenuous backcountry route offers a rewarding mix of geological features, remote forest, and classic central Pennsylvania scenery.
