Description
Kelso Dunes Loop is a 3.8-mile loop that traverses the Kelso Dunes in Mojave National Preserve. Hiking the dunes is one of the most popular treks within the national preserve. It features sweeping summit views across a vast mojave desert landscape and the surrounding jagged peaks of nearby mountain ranges. The route to the top of the dunes is short and accessible to most individuals. However, it is still physically demanding with a steep climb and an overall elevation gain of around 500 feet. Kelso Dunes is one of seven known dune fields in the country that produce a "booming" sound when large clumps of sand fall from the crest like an avalanche. The right conditions are needed for these dunes to "boom" and that means having uniform grains of smooth, dry sand. Although it is one of the most popular places to visit in the park, it is still possible to find some quiet solitude.WATERThere is no water at the trailhead or along the trail. Visitors must plan to bring and carry enough water for the duration of their visit. CAMPINGCamping is permitted at established (undeveloped) campsites. The campsites are all first-come, first-served. Camping is not allowed at Dunes trailhead.FEEThere is no entrance fee required for Mojave National Preserve. REGULATIONSDrones are not permitted. All trash and waste must be packed out.Weapons are not allowed at Kelso Dunes.Commercial photography requires a special permit. CONSIDERATIONSSummer hiking is not advisable in this area due to extreme heat and temperatures that can reach well over 100 degrees. The trail is fully exposed with no shade. Sun protective clothing is advised. The dirt road leading to the trailhead does not require 4-wheel drive or high clearance, however it can be bumpy and slow and may have potholes after recent rains.ADDITIONAL INFORMATIONNPS - Kelso Dunes
