Description
The Lynd Point Trail is a 2.5-mile-long lollipop loop when combined with the Europe Bay Trail. The Lynd Point Trail is located in Door County's Newport State Park. This trail takes hikers near the rocky shores of Lake Michigan while hiking through a dense forest. This hike is quite flat, but be aware of roots and rocks on the trail. There is a fee to enter the park; a day use or annual permit can be purchased at the State Park Office. Dogs are allowed on this trail, but must be on a leash. Parking for this hike is available at Parking Lot 3. There are vault toilets near this parking lot.Start this hike by heading east towards the beach on a paved path. After about a tenth of a mile turn left onto the wide and flat Europe Bay Trail. It should be noted that off-road bikes are allowed on the Europe Bay Trail. Follow the Europe Bay Trail for 0.2 miles, turn right onto the Lynd Point Trail here. For the next mile and a quarter, the narrow trail goes through the woods near the rocky shoreline of Lake Michigan. There a many side trails along the way that allow hikers to view the beautiful shore. The trail next heads southwest away from the lake. There is a dolostone ledge on this portion of the trail that was once an ancient shoreline. After a quarter mile the Lynd Point Trail ends and meets the Europe Bay Trail. Take the Europe Bay Trail south for about a half mile back to the parking lot. An alternate way back to the parking lot is to continue straight at the Europe Bay Trail intersection onto the Fern Trail.
