Description
The scenic Blueberry Ledge Trail ascends Mount Whiteface and provides several views along the way to the summit. Mount Whiteface (4020 feet) is one of New Hampshire's 48 mountains over 4000 feet. The Blueberry Ledge Trail begins at the Ferncroft Road parking area. There are other trails that begin here, so be sure to find the correct trailhead. After parking, return to Ferncroft Road and follow it to Squirrel Bridge Road. Follow the Blueberry Ledge Trail across the bridge and turn right to continue on a private dirt road (passing several houses), where the trail eventually leads into the woods. The trail continues in the woods at gentle grades and crosses into the Sandwich Range Wilderness. Here, the Blueberry Ledge Trail begins to ascend more moderately and reaches the bottom of the Blueberry Ledges at 1.6 miles, with a limited view of Mount Chocorua. The trail climbs to the top of these ledges at 2 miles. Pass the intersection with the Blueberry Ledge Cutoff and continue into the woods. Continue climbing many rock steps, and pass the Wonalancet Outlook before moving toward the edge of a steep cliff. The trail then climbs a steep ledge that can be challenging and dangerous if wet. Along the rocky ridgeline that continues, there are many great viewpoints to the east and west. Be sure to stop at the ledge around 3.8 miles that overlooks the Bowl. To continue the true, wooded summit of Mount Whiteface, follow the Rollins Trail.
