Description
This hike summiting North and Middle Tripyramid, two 4000+ foot peaks, uses Pine Bend Brook Trail and Sabbaday Brook Trail and requires either two cars or a road walk back to the beginning trailhead. The description below begins at the Pine Bend Brook Trailhead and ends at the Sabbaday Brook Trailhead. The Pine Bend Brook Trailhead is located on the Kancamagus Highway, and there is no parking lot and thus street parking is required. The Sabbaday Brook Trailhead has a parking lot and requires a day use pass. Pine Bend Brook Trail leaves the highway and follows an old logging railroad grade, a branch of the Pine Bend Brook, and an old logging road. The trail first crosses the stream at 0.8 miles and continues to follow the brook with a few more stream crossings. The trail begins with easy grades and transitions into a steeper climb as you near the ridge running from Mount Tripyramid North to Scaur Ridge. Upon reaching the junction with the Scaur Ridge Trail, Pine Bend Brook Trail becomes more level until reaching the final steep, rocky climb to the North Peak (4180 ft). Just before the summit, Pine Bend Brook meets and coincides with the Mount Tripyramid Trail. The summit is wooded but provides partial views to the northeast. The trail then descends the North Peak briefly before the junction with the Sabbaday Brook Trail. Continue straight along the Mount Tripyramid Trail for another 0.3 miles to reach the Middle Peak (4140 ft). The area near the true summit affords views both west and east.To complete the hike, retrace your steps back to the junction with Sabbaday Brook Trail and take it to begin your descent to the Sabbaday Brook trailhead. The initial descent is steep and rough but then begins to level out and parallels Sabbaday Brook for a majority of the 4.9 miles, with many stream crossings that may be difficult at higher flows. The popular Sabbaday Falls are located just 0.25 miles from the parking lot and there is a side trail that provides different vantage points of the falls before following a wide, gravel path back to the Sabbaday Falls parking lot. If you are unable to use two cars, you would return to the Pine Bend Brook Trailhead by walking west along the Kancamagus Highway.
