Description
Couchville Lake, located within the borders of Long Hunter State Park, is a popular destination for hiking, fishing, kayaking/canoeing, and birding. A fishing pier is located at the start of the trailhead, and boat rentals are available for those who wish to explore the area via water. The trail around the lake stretches for 2.2 miles and provides a glimpse into the interesting ecosystem surrounding Couchville Lake. Blue heron, prothonotary warbler, hooded merganser, and osprey are among the commonly spotted bird species in the area, and bigger game such as turkey and deer can often be found. The trail is paved and provides the opportunity for a leisurely stroll around the lake. A highlight of the trail is a long wooden bridge that stretches across the northern end of the lake. The bridge makes for a great picture stop, and it offers a beautiful view across the lake. The path is also home to the Couchville Lake Arboretum, where 42 species of trees are identified and labeled. Species including oak, hickory, cedar, dogwood, mulberry, willow, cottonwood, and elm can be found along the trail. The trees are identified with a small label denoting the species as well as a painting that can be found below the tree on the paved trail surface. Many other hiking trails can be found within Long Hunter State Park including the Volunteer Trail, which offers an overnight backpacking opportunity. Percy Priest Reservoir is also abounding in recreational opportunities, both on land and water.
