Description
Silver Dollar Lake and Murray Lake Trail is a challenging but rewarding hike located about an hour and a half outside of Denver, Colorado. This hike departs from a trailhead located along a dirt road just off of Guanella Pass Road, and there are many nearby hikes, climbing areas, and campgrounds. Note that during winter months the dirt road to the trailhead is closed, extending the hike by half a mile, though snowshoeing is allowed. From the trailhead, follow the trail through thick forests before soon emerging above the timberline and receiving excellent views of the surrounding peaks. This trail is moderate, as it consistently gains elevation over the two miles to Silver Dollar and Murray Lake. In the summer, you'll walk through fields of thick bushes and wildflowers, which can turn the trail muddy as snow begins to melt. After about a mile and a half you will reach Silver Dollar Lake, a stunning sight with opportunities for fishing as well. Continue up a steep push and you'll reach your final destination, Murray Lake. Both areas offer space to grab a snack and drink of water before making the trek back down to the trailhead parking area. This trail is a great option for those looking for a day hike outside of Denver, and who don't want to worry about paying a parking fee.
