Description
Golden Trout Lake Trail is a short and steep backcountry trail in the John Muir Wilderness just west of Independence, California. The trailhead is located at the end of Onion Valley Road, and it starts with a strenuous climb gaining over 2,000 feet in about two miles! Your efforts will be rewarded by a pristine and quiet alpine lake sparkling among granite boulders. Suitable for experienced hikers, this trail can be completed in a day trip, overnight trip, or as part of a longer backpacking trip. From the end of Onion Valley Road, the Golden Trout Lake heads northwest. At 2.6 miles, you will come to a junction. Turn left and head southwest for .5 miles until you reach Golden Trout Lake underneath Mount Gould. After leaving Golden Trout Lake, the route returns half a mile to the junction. Continue northwest for .9 miles until you reach two unnamed lakes between Dragon Peak and Kearsarge Peak. To return to the start simply retract your steps from the last two lakes (skipping the out and back to Golden Trout Lake) and descend as steeply as you climbed until reaching the road. Sections of this trail are steep and rocky. As a primitive trail, Golden Trout Lake Trail is rarely used and poorly maintained. Go slow and be mindful of your steps when traversing steeply over loose rock and talus. It is recommended that visitors have a basic understanding of map reading and route finding. OVERNIGHT CAMPINGIf you are planning to camp in the backcountry a permit will be required and must be obtained in advance. Information about backcountry permits can be found at www.recreation.gov.It is also possible to stay overnight at Onion Valley Campground, which is located adjacent to the trailhead. Keep in mind that the campground is first come, first served, and there is a fee.MORE INFORMATIONEastern Sierra Interagency Visitor Center: 1-(760) 876-6200.Wilderness Permit Information: 1-(760) 873-2483.
