This 15-acre island near Cutler, Maine, offers an unforgettable adventure. Here you can explore the islandas woods and rocky coast and get an up-close look at the islandas lighthouse, all on the same hike. Friends of Little River Lighthouse, a chapter of the American Lighthouse Foundation, offers overnight lodging in the keeperas house and special free open houses when you may explore the island and hike the trail. The Friends of Little River Lighthouse will even provide free boat transportation to the island from the town landing in Cutler. Children must have their own life jackets. Once you dock at Little River Island, there is a half-mile hike across the island on a wooden plank walkway to get to the lighthouse. Explore the area, enjoy climbing on the rocks and listening to the rhythmic sound of the foghorn. Then hike the perimeter portion of the trail where you can watch fishing boats pass by, see shore birds diving for food, and discover crab shells in the forest.
