This strenuous route begins from a trailhead off Whiteface Inn Road in the Saranac Lake Wild Forest, climbing north along the Two Brooks Trail toward Moose Mountain. The trail ascends steadily through dense forest, following a faint and often unmaintained path. Moose Mountain’s summit is wooded, but offers solitude and occasional glimpses from ledge openings. From there, the route turns west to join the Wadsworth Trail and continues over rugged terrain toward McKenzie Mountain. This section includes steep scrambles, slick rock, and narrow tread—navigation can be difficult, especially in poor weather.
After reaching the summit of McKenzie Mountain, hikers are rewarded with expansive views of Lake Placid and the surrounding High Peaks. From the summit, the route turns southeast and descends steeply to meet the Bartlett Pond Trail. Bartlett Pond provides a quiet spot for rest and reliable water before the final stretch returns to the trailhead. Seasonal brooks appear early on, but there are no water sources near either summit. This loop demands fitness, route-finding skill, and preparedness for remote conditions—but the mix of rugged terrain, summit views, and forest solitude offers a rewarding challenge for experienced hikers.
