Access Issues
According to The Nature Conservancy: After much deliberation, we've decided to close the Preserve to unscheduled visits from March 1st until the first Sunday in June and from October 1st until December 30th each year. This will bring predictability for users, reduce impacts to wildlife and maintain the condition of the trail on this TNC property. Thanks for your understanding.

Description
Getting there: From either Cody or Powell, take Powell Highway to R19 (same road as the Heart Mountain Relocation Center). Follow R19 for approximately 5 miles until you reach a small dirt lot with a sign and visitor registration. After you've filled out the required info and shut the gate behind you, continue down the road for a few more miles to a second dirt lot with restrooms and a cabin operated by The Nature Conservancy. Beginning at the cabin, take the two-track path leading through grassy, rolling hills dotted with stands of trees and small outcroppings of boulders. While hiking, stop by the many small kiosks containing information related to the local flora, fauna, geography and geology found within the preserve as well as notable historical and influential figures of the area. After a few miles of two-track, the trail narrows to a single lane at a sign and breaks into the forest. Gradual hiking through tall brush and trees leads on to the switchbacks that gain Heart Mountain proper. Along the switchbacks are overlooks that open up the field of view from many angles of the surrounding area.
