Description
This route begins at the Lake Fork Trailhead southwest of Red Lodge and climbs gradually along the Lake Fork of Rock Creek. After passing Keyser Brown Lake and September Morn Lake, the trail climbs steeply through rocky terrain to reach Sundance Pass, a high crossing with sweeping views of granite peaks and deep drainages. From the pass, the trail descends sharply toward Sundance Lake, then follows the West Fork of Rock Creek through forested terrain, eventually reaching the West Fork Trailhead to the northeast. Expect a mix of maintained trail, rocky alpine switchbacks, and seasonal snowfields near the pass. Water is available throughout, but always treat before drinking. Grizzly bear presence is common—carry bear spray and observe wilderness best practices. Wildflowers and mountain wildlife are abundant in midsummer. The payoff is a challenging, scenic route deep in the heart of the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness.
