Description
From the intersection with the Hilina Pali Trail, head south, descending through scrub brush. Hook westwards and hike below an impressive dark cliff wall. Just before reaching the water, the Puna Coast Trail arrives from the east and terminates here. Upon reaching the coastline, a palm tree-lined oasis awaits! Understandably, this is a very popular destination. The Halape backcountry campsites are strung along behind a white sand beach and a serene cove. Three-walled, wooden lean-tos provide some shade and untreated water is sometimes available from roof runoff collected into tanks. Check out the tiki statues carved into dead palm trees nearby. It is possible to snorkel close to shore if the ocean is calm. Also worth exploring are some long brackish pools set in a rocky ravine, just behind the cove.
