Description
You can't judge a trail by any one time of the year, and this trail is no exception. I've run and hiked it more times than I can count at all seasons of the year, and it is easily one of my most favorite trails along the Wasatch Front. I get nostalgic just thinking about this place. You can start this trail in two different places. For a longer outing, start at the parking that is just up above Farmington Pond (this may be your only option in winter if the canyon road gate is closed). Follow a network of trails into Farmington Canyon. Don't worry too much about taking the wrong fork at any point. Just follow your nose into the canyon, and you'll eventually find the only trail that takes you furthest inward. This will lead to the switch-back where the canyon road goes from paved to unpaved, at which point there is also a pull-out for parking. This is the other starting location for the trail, if you'd like to drive into the canyon to get to the more scenic part of the hike sooner. From the pull-out at the end of the pavement, the trail follows the north side of the canyon, but stays a fair distance from the creek. Enjoy the flora and fauna the whole way to a fun waterfall! You can hike to the base of it, or to the top of it but use caution. From the waterfall, you can continue further into the canyon a ways until the trail disappears near some old abandoned mining equipment, or you can take the switch-backs up to Sunset Campground. This is a good place to stop and eat/re-hydrate. From here, simply return the same way that you came to get back to the trailhead(s) and your vehicle.
