Description
Hermitage Point is a small peninsula sticking out into Jackson Lake just across from the majestic Teton range in Grand Teton National Park. A mostly flat 10-mile loop trail starts out from the Colter Bay boat launch and takes you through several distinct environments on your way to the isthmus. The hike brings you near several lakes, bays, inlets and creeks and is absolutely loaded with wildlife. Along with river otters, geese, ducks and birds of prey, there is a good chance to see a moose or even a bear here. The trail has a few ascents and descents, but it is essentially a long flat walk that is nice considering how steep some of the other hikes in the park can be. While many people start out on the trail, most turn back long before the point itself, so may have it to yourself. Some of the pine forests can get quite heavy and even a little boring in stretches, but there are enough visuals on this hike to keep you entertained. The views along the north trail are stunning sights of the entire Teton range from Half Moon Bay, while the southern views show the beautiful Third Creek running into the lake. Always bring your spray when hiking in the general territory;bear sign is abundant in the area. The hike is exposed in certain stretches, so bring sun protection on hot days. There is a backcountry campsite on the southeast side of the loop, but you will need to reserve if you want to camp here. There are some flowers in summer and a few colors in fall, but overall the beauty comes from the views and the animals. This is a nice hike for anyone who wants a long day on the trail without large elevation gains.
