Description
Hop Valley Trail is a 14-mile point-to-point in Zion National Park. The trailhead is located off of Kolob Terrace Road and leads north across high desert terrain. The sandy trail passes through open, grassy fields with expansive views of the surrounding colorful red cliffs and unique rock formations.About 5.2 miles into the hike, the trail descends into Hop Valley, providing stunning views of the Kolob rock formations. At the end of Hop Valley, the trail meets La Verkin Creek Trail, where visitors can take a side trip to Kolob Arch or extend their hike along La Verkin. Otherwise, this is where Hop Valley Trail turns around.Hop Valley Trail has an overall elevation gain of 1,552 feet and is rated easy to moderate. If you are looking for a hike that is relatively easy, accessible, and away from the crowds, this is an excellent choice. It is open to runners, hikers, backpackers, and horseback riders. WHEN TO VISITLate Spring, summer, and fall are ideal seasons to visit Hop Valley Trail. The trail may have snow in winter that can remain through early spring. No matter when you go, it is always a good idea to check current weather conditions before heading out. WATERAccording to the national park, visitors should plan to bring and carry all necessary water for this hike. CAMPING AND PERMITSCamping is allowed in designated sites and a backcountry permit is required for overnight stays. There are two campsites along Hop Valley Trail, both are located at the far end of the valley, before the steep descent to La Verkin Creek. Hop Valley Campsite A is open to stock use and is available through an online reservation system.
