Description
Cinder Cone Volcano is a short but steep hike that provides stellar views near St. George, Utah. The hike is within the boundary of Snow Canyon State Park, however there is no fee required for parking at this trailhead and hiking this trail. Speaking of, this trailhead can be easy to miss as it is only a small turnoff on the side of Highway 18.Once you've parked, begin your hike. The trail starts off easy and you'll have a great view of the Cinder Cone Volcano. This volcano, along with the smaller Santa Clara Volcano just to the north, was responsible for the lava flow that covers so much of this area. The trail winds around to the east side of the volcano and traverses a fence line (you'll see a sign for private property and dangerous animals - stay to the right of the fence). The trail steady gains elevation as it works its way up to a saddle. From here continue to the right as the trail goes straight up toward the summit of the volcano. It is steep hiking and the lava rock makes for some crumbly footing so be sure to take your time here - especially on the descent. Finally the trail tops out at the summit. You'll have fantastic views, including one of colorful Snow Canyon State Park. From here you can return to the trailhead, or continue on and hike around the crater of the Cinder Cone Volcano. Doing so will add a bit more milage and elevation change to the hike.
