Description
The Lake Gregory Loop path is an easy hiking trail that circles the shores of the lake and offers views of the forests in the San Bernardino Mountain town of Crestline. With a total length of 2.6 miles, the trail is a well used dirt path that generally stays flat along the lakeshore. Along the more popular southern side of the lake, the trail passes park features such as a dog park, fitness stations, a small sand beach with paddle boat rentals, and areas for fishing. The trail passes through a diverse section of areas, from crowded park areas nearer the multiple parking lots to quieter and more secluded shores that open up to epic views of the forested landscape rising over the waters, to a crowded beachfront section with waterslides and playground equipment that forces hikers to stick to the sidewalks for a small stretch. At its best, however, the path traces tree-lined banks within Lake Gregory Regional Park, feeling much further removed from everything than the crowds at the play park just a short walk away actually are. Along the path, there are plenty of benches to take a seat and take in the mountainous surroundings. At a couple points, the dirt path heads onto the sidewalks in order to cross a bridge over a stream, or to avoid the play area that can get incredibly crowded during the summer. (Though for those who pay admission into this area, it is possible to trace the actual lake shore from one end of the fenced in area to the other.) For the most part, the walking path is quiet and follows a calm lake edge through tree-covered areas, giving a breath of fresh air in this small mountain town.Bathrooms and water are available at a couple points along the hike. There are multiple paid parking lots throughout the regional park, and free curbside parking is also available along the lake, however this can fill up quick during the summer months.More park information can be found here.
