Description
The Kakiat Trail (white markers) is one of the more difficult and rugged trails in Harriman State Park. This is a through hike that will require a shuttle car. This is another trail that traverses the southern section of Harriman State Park. You can park or walk from Tuxedo Station on Route 17 and followEast Village road to Grove road. The trailhead is near the end of the road. The trail follows a steep wide forest road along the back end of Dater Mountain that tapers to single track after the mountain. Rounding Dater Mountain is one of the more enjoyable sections of this route. After rounding the mountain in .6 miles the trail reaches Spring Brook, which is very picturesque with a lot of moss covered rocks along the brook. A little further along the the trail reaches another forest where the route turns left then immediatley right to cross Seven Lakes Drive.Cross the road and climb up and travel for less than a mile until the trail reaches Stony Brook. The brook is wide and the bridge washed out many years ago. The park serve has no plans to replace and crossing Stony Brook can be very difficult. Bushwack to the left less than 100 yards and there is a downed tree that is wide enough to support the weight of someone crossing the stream. Further up stream the trail will cross Pine Meadow Brook on a well constructed bridge. There is not many views over the next 2 miles. There are three stream crossing that are easy to cross and the trail is very rocky through this sections as well as when you descend Cobus Mountain. After the trail crosses the Suffern-Bear Mountain Trail (yellow markers), it is 1.5 miles to Kakiat County Park where you could park a shuttle car. Beware of the time you start as Kakiat County Park closes at sunset.
