Description
Nounou Mountain, also popularly called the Sleeping Giant as it's said that the mountainous landscape resemebles a giant lying down on its back, has three trails climbing to its peak. The Sleeping Giant West Trail is the shortest route to the top, climbing about 1000 feet over a 2 mile round trip hike. Beginning in a neighborhood that has a few parking spots at the end of a street, the path begins climbing immediately, quickly heading into a forested path that can likely be muddy if there has been rainy conditions recently.Upon entering the trees, the path forks with the Kuamo'o Nounou Trail [submitted this at the same time, add hyperlink]. Sign point the direction toward the summit. The trail switches back up the mountain. At about 3/4 of a mile up, the path hits a small clearing with views over the Kauai shore and covered picnic benches. The final stretch to the top climbs a narrow single track. At one last fork, a large rock outcropping has panoramic views over the east side of Kauai, as well as the Wailua River and shore below. While this is a popular spot for people to line up to take pictures at, continuing slightly further up the trail will lead to a less crowded panoramic view.Take in the view, then turn around and retrace your route back down. There are no bathrooms or water anywhere along the hike. Parking is limited.Alternatively, hikers can take the Nounou East Trail up.
