The Elbow Lake Trail begins at the East Fork Mill Creek Trailhead in the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness and follows a steady, scenic climb into high country. The route parallels East Fork Mill Creek for a brief period before ascending gradually through mixed forest and open meadows. After a short distance, the trail begins to climb more steadily along Sage and Elbow Creeks, crossing occasional rocky sections and offering views of the surrounding Absaroka peaks. Wildflowers are abundant in summer, and wildlife sightings—especially moose and bear—are possible throughout the route.
Stay on the main trail as it winds westward, continuing through forested switchbacks and increasingly open terrain. The final stretch rises above treeline, where exposure to sun and weather increases. Elbow Lake sits in a high alpine basin ringed by rugged cliffs, making it a rewarding destination for backcountry hikers. This route is ideal for those seeking moderate elevation gain, scenic views, and a quieter destination among day hikes in the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness. The trail follows the same route back making it a proper out and back trail.
