Description
In this 6.2mi route, hikers will get to explore the Sonoran Desert as well as getting to a very rare crested cactus. A crested cactus is a unique and fascinating plant characterized by its unusual growth pattern, which results in a fan-shaped, undulating form rather than the typical cylindrical or columnar shape of most cacti. This cresting occurs due to a mutation at the growth point, causing the plant to produce a wide, flattened area instead of a normal, vertical structure. The result is a visually striking plant with a wavy, often intricate appearance.Besides getting to experience a beautiful cactus the landscape around this trail is stunning. There is not potable water at the trailhead so hikers will need to come prepared with enough water. Hikers will start out on the Bootlegger Trail and follow that towards Granite Mountain. This part of the trail is beautiful with cacti and boulders lining the trail. Hikers will continue along the Bootlegger Trail for 2.5mi until Hikers Reach Coyote Canyon Trail. This portion of the trail is where hikers will experience all of the elevation gain, where hikers will gain roughly 300 feet of elevation. Hikers will follow this trail for roughly 0.5mi until the intersection of the Desperado Trail. At this point hikers will be at the location of the Crested Cactus. Hikers will be able to identify the intricate fan of the crested cactus and admire its beauty. Hikers will continue along the Coyote Canyon until it merges with the Dive Valley Trail and hikers will follow the trail back to the trailhead. This trail is a beautiful way to explore the Sonoran Desert as it provides a view of the surrounding wilderness. The Scottsdale Sonoran Preserve is must see park on any outdoor enthusiasts must-do list.
